President's Message

Looking Toward the Future

June 23, 2009

By Kevin Jackson, CPA

5_pres_sm_0.jpgNow that summer has officially landed, I hope many of you have begun your summer vacations and various activities. As we embark on our summer holidays, please take time for yourselves and enjoy your successes.

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new candidate, licensed and student members. I’m looking forward to meeting you at upcoming events and helping you discover CalCPA’s value.

Our chapter recently awarded scholarships to four promising and talented Cal Poly students. Your board member Brandi Short, past president Rusty Roy and I presented the awards at the May 30 banquet. We had the opportunity to speak with many bright candidates that evening, and I was impressed with their gratitude and eagerness.

Our chapter has long been proud and fortunate to consistently award several academic scholarships to our local colleges each year. The economic turmoil, however, has presented us with a rising obstacle. Later this year, we will have a special eight-hour CPE event designated as our scholarship event, meaning the proceeds will be added to our local scholarship fund. We ask that you support our local and upcoming talent by attending this event. More details will follow in upcoming announcements.

We are in our beginning stages of developing several activities aimed at our YEPs (young & emerging professionals.) We want to support and acknowledge these members who are vital to our chapter—and profession. Our YEP Committee chairs are Alexis Rietdyk and Kim Spiller, and I am excited they’ve joined us. We will explore various activities this year, and we welcome your suggestions. I am always interested meeting our YEP members and hearing about their needs and ideas.

The recent article in the June issue of California CPA regarding SB 691 spread encouraging news as the bill marches through the legislative process. Unfortunately, there are some dark, unresolved issues. One particularly sobering paragraph reads: “NASBA has designated California as a substantially equivalent state only until January 2012, but some states are already denying California CPAs substantially equivalent status …” If you haven’t read the article yet, you will want to, especially if your clients operate in other states. Check it out online.

Now to end this message with a more positive note—it’s summer! More daylight, warmer temperatures, family and friends—go out and enjoy!
