President's Message
September 1, 2010
By Karan Pohl
Can you believe it is September already? Where did the summer go? For me, September signals the beginning of fall—a season of transition and change. Now, some would grumble about summer departing so quickly. But I enjoy the changes in the weather, the heralding of winter and the upcoming holidays. It really is a matter of perspective and how one reacts to change that determines whether this is a period of discontent or possibilities. Are you interested in politics? Well, neither am I. What I am passionate about, though, is having an impact on the legislative process to positively affect the direction of the California accounting industry. After years of CalCPA focusing its legislative efforts mostly in Sacramento, a philosophical change has occurred to start empowering us to reach out on a local level.
As the chapter’s new Grassroots Legislative Committee chair, I am looking to organize a team of people who are interested in building relationships with our local state legislators and their staff. Your commitment level can be as much or as little as you desire, and since this is the inaugural year of this team, your input will help steer the direction in which we can best communicate with our elected officials.
If you are interested in joining or have questions about the team, please contact me so we can move forward and make an impression on the local candidates before November!

Did you know that CalCPA administers two scholarship funds—one for fifth-year students committed to following California’s Pathway 2 to CPA licensure and the other for students pursuing a master’s degree in accountancy or taxation?
Well, we do—and the application deadline—Sept. 30—is fast approaching.
For criteria regarding both scholarships and to download the application, visit our website.
