Honorees’ Night
More than 60 members, students, faculty and guests attended this year’s Honorees’ Night. It was a special evening of recognition and heartwarming stories. The LeVerne Garcia Award for outstanding service to the profession or the community was made posthumously to Stephen Blanding. Stephen was a well-respected member of the accounting profession and was heavily involved in community service.
Also during the evening, eight very deserving students were presented scholarships totaling $21,000. This year’s awards reflected the implementation of the chapter’s new scholarship program, which incorporates three classes of awards. The Promising Accounting Scholar Award is presented to students in their first year of professional studies. The recipients in this category were Kelly Cao, Janet Lin and Aron Schindler of UC Berkeley, as well as Chelsey Marderosian of St. Mary’s College. The Emerging Accounting Scholar Award is presented to those students in their senior year or second graduate year. The recipients were Libby Zhou, Jenny Zhou and Jacqueline Lee, all of UC Berkeley. And, finally, Danielle Bortoli of UC Berkeley received the chapter’s Outstanding Accounting Scholar Award, which is given to the most deserving graduating undergraduate or graduate student.
Funding for these awards comes from individuals, organizations and designated chapter events held throughout the year.
Guest speaker Assembly member Mary Hayashi, along with presenting special certificates to all the honorees, called on all members to be advocates on behalf of the profession by visiting with their legislators to ensure that their message is heard. Check out some photos from this event, as well as others from past events.
