Meet the Board: Ted Collins, Director
This month, we shine the spotlight on chapter director Ted Collins, who works in the business valuation group of Vicenti Lloyd & Stutzman in Glendora. Ted helps business owners and their professional advisers understand the value of their building holdings, which is important in estate planning, sale/transfer negotiations, buy/sell agreements and shareholder disputes. Ted is also involved in litigation support matters such as damage and lost profits calculations. And just because he isn’t quite busy enough, Ted is finishing his MBA at Chapman University.
Childhood was idyllic for Ted as he grew up on a small farm in the Midwest and has many happy memories of working in the garden and adventuring in the forest on the farm property. But he has also traveled internationally, spending one hot summer in the Malaysian province of Sabah on the island of Borneo. Working with an international development organization, he helped build a gravity-fed water supply system for a village. Today, Ted enjoys reading books about human nature and societal structure, and monitoring economic and creative blogs such as Makezine. He also tinkers in the garage and is planning a modernization of an airstream trailer. Ted really enjoys cloud watching and would love to take a summer off and drive around the Midwest chasing storms. “There is beauty in the power of a thunderstorm,” he says. “It’s almost like a play with different acts, each transitioning into the other.”
In addition to his CalCPA involvement, Ted networks with the Executive TEAM and attends IMA meetings when he can. He is happy to share his financial expertise, having counseled on personal financial matters for his church.
Ted lives in Chino with his wife, Jennifer, who is in the process of finishing a program to become a hospital chaplain. There may soon be an addition to the Collins household: Ted and Jennifer are planning on getting a German Shepherd in the near future.
When asked if he had anything to share with the chapter membership, Ted said, “For years I simply belonged to CalCPA and would pay my dues without getting much perceived value. About five years ago it dawned on me that I needed to participate to really receive value. I began attending meetings more regularly and eventually about two years ago joined as a board member. It has been very good meeting other practitioners who see the importance of working together to support our profession. At the heart of what we do as CPAs is service, being involved in the chapter surrounds you with like minded professionals who really care about the profession and are positive in their outlook.”
