CPA for a Day
By Steven Valdes, CPA, Young and Emerging Committee Member
The chapter recently teamed up for a day with the Puente Project to highlight careers in accounting and the pursuit of higher education.
The award-winning Puente Project has helped thousands of students attend four-year colleges and universities. As part of the Los Angeles Chapter I was asked to participate in a prestigious career panel, speak to students, represent all the CPAs in my chapter and highlight what it means to be a CPA for a Day.
Accounting is definitely the language of business. Wherever you end up in life these skills will always come handy. There is a definite demand and need for skilled accountants. These were just some the messages I wanted the kids to take home. It was important to talk about accounting and what it means to be a CPA, as well as pursuing your own goals and your own dreams in life and continue to strive for achievement.
It was a great feeling to speak and a rewarding experience. I had such a great time that I would encourage every CPA, manager and partner to go back to their high school and college and give a speech about your career. It is important that young kids see you as the successful person you are. It is important to go back to where it began for you and let teachers and professors know how you are doing. It is a great feeling for educators who work hard to see you thriving in business and life. It is a very powerful message that college students see your name on that business card and what you have accomplished. They want to hear your ideas, experiences and learn from you.
For those of you professionals looking for a way to give back to the community, CalCPA has a variety of financial literacy and community outreach opportunities. I would encourage every professional to be a CPA for a Day.
