Gratefulness
By David R. Motes, CPA
The end of the calendar year is rapidly approaching, and the holidays are almost here. As you know, the past year has been very unusual and challenging. In my lifetime, I have not seen the major events that we are experiencing. The economic and financial difficulties have been devastating to many of our close friends and clients, and it appears that a period of uncertainty remains. I am frequently asked, “Have we reached the bottom of our financial crisis?” My crystal ball does not have the answer. I wish it did. Unfortunately, these events have impacted the lives of everyone and will continue to do so for a while. Despite these difficult times, it is very important for all of us to take a moment and reflect on all of the positive things for which we can be grateful.
From a CalCPA perspective, our membership is strong and viable at approximately 32,000 members, an increase of approximately 1,700 members from this time last year. The talent, expertise and dedication of CalCPA’s staff members are exceptional. But, more importantly, are the time, resources and dedication contributed by our volunteer leadership at the state and chapter levels. This team of volunteer professionals is working on your behalf to preserve your ability to practice as CPAs in California and to keep you informed of the issues affecting our profession now and in the future.
From our chapter’s standpoint, we have and will continue to sponsor several new events during this term. The enthusiasm and support for these new programs, by both our membership and our outside partners, have been outstanding. Participation on most of our major chapter committees has increased this year. The future of your chapter is very bright and encouraging.
Despite some issues this year, I am grateful for my overall good health, which is the foundation that enables me to maintain a positive attitude during these stressful times. This, in turn, enables me to address the pending financial crisis and uncertainties from a position of strength rather than having to react from a position of fear. I am very grateful for the support of my family during this challenging period. Our bonds have strengthened, we are more united and positive and we recognize how blessed we really are. More importantly, I am especially grateful for my two grandsons. They are our future, and they are our teachers. I learn so many lessons from them because of their interaction in my life. Without their presence, my life would be empty. I also am very grateful to all of my family members, colleagues and friends who surround me and empower me to reach higher plateaus.
Yes, I have a lot to be grateful for. What are you grateful for?
I wish everyone a happy and joyous holiday season.
