I want to thank all of the sponsors, players and volunteers who helped make the chapter’s golf tournament a great success. The Morgan Creek Golf & Country Club is extremely welcoming. I want to give a special thanks to tournament coordinators Sandy Hongo and Holly Roznowski. As always, the tournament helps our scholarship fund for students pursuing an accounting degree.

Summer is definitely here. I know that a lot of us are more comfortable in slacks and a dress shirt than shorts and a polo shirt, but it’s time to replace the green visor with a ball cap and enjoy our weather.

The CPA profession has had difficulties adjusting to change. The use of technology makes us nervous because we’ll have to think in a different way and learn something new. How many times have you broken out your four-column ledger paper to work out a problem? I have a colleague who has a calculator that is so old that when he presses the plus button, it makes a sound so loud that the walls shake. It’s about the size and weight of a small tank. I will confess that I’m the first person in the office to show that piece of machinery to new staff members. I do it for a couple of reasons: I’m amazed that the calculator functions and provides my colleague with continued usefulness, and it provides me with a sense of comfort that sometimes doing something differently isn’t necessarily progress.

Summer is a time for many CPA firms to reflect on how their tax season went. Some CPA firms have realized that the ability of some of their clients to pay has diminished somewhat during the course of the year. Some clients may have the ability to pay, but are not willing to pay what they would consider a “premium” price for service.

March 26th, 2010
By Patrick D. Rogan, CPA
April marks the end of my term as chapter president. This experience has been very rewarding, but has gone way too fast. During this time, I have met a lot of new people.
I would like to thank the leadership team for its hard and eager work this year. The team came together and worked to make CalCPA and the chapter a better place for you to participate in our monthly events.

March 22nd, 2010
By Patrick D. Rogan, CPA
March is traditionally considered “March Madness” month, referring to the NCAA basketball tourney. Well, that may well be the way many of us are feeling right now. Too much to do and not enough time to get it all done.
The ABC Night at the Sutter Club was a smashing success. This was the second year of the event and it was sold out again—long before the date of the event. Those of you who attended had a wonderful time mixing with peers, attorneys and bankers. Those of you who tried to register late and missed out, shame on you for waiting so long to register. A hearty thank you goes to David Motes, Rob Wallace, Anjela Dyatlov and Annette Stalker for organizing such a wonderful and fun event.

January 29th, 2010

As we enter February, many of us are experiencing the traditional busy time of the year in our business. Time is short, patience is thin and a tremendous time pressure occurs. Keep in mind the important things each of us treasures as this time will soon pass.
This may be the only time of the year that we see some of our clients. Take the time to make it special for them. CPAs are our clients’ trusted advisers. Clients come to you for a reason. Do not take them for granted. Make them feel special and want to use your services more because of how you treat them. Listen to their needs closely and the rewards will exceed the effort.

I wish each of you a wonderful 2010 as we begin the new year.
The profession made great strides in 2009 with our successes in Sacramento, including legislation that makes California CPAs substantially equivalent and able to compete on equal footing with the rest of the country.

’Tis the season to be happy! I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday season.
Last month I presented the most recent legislative gains CalCPA garnered. What I did not know at the time I wrote the article was that the victory had been achieved along very difficult roads. This illustrates that the dedication and hard work of CalCPA’s government relations staff, friends of the profession and many CalCPA members made this long and difficult process a successful endeavor.
One item of note I did not pass on last month was that continuing education requirements are changing effective Jan. 1, 2010. These changes include:
- Four hours of continuing education on ethics for every renewal period;
- A two-hour regulatory review course every six years covering the California Accountancy Act, plus California Board of Accountancy regulations and enforcement actions; and
- A minimum of 20 hours of continuing education (with a minimum of 12 hours in technical subject matter) each year of the two-year license renewal period as part of the 80-hour CE requirement.
More information on the new CPE requirements is available on CalCPA’s website.
As I write this message, the chapter’s annual student event at Sacramento State is sold out. What a tremendous response we’ve had from students, educators and professionals. This type of showing reflects how CPAs truly are interested in the future of our profession. Next month I will report on the success of the event.
The second annual ABC Night is fast approaching. Save the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 2, when attorneys, bankers and CPAs will gather at the Sutter Club to network and share stories. Last year’s event sold out and more than 250 people attended. This year we anticipate hosting more than 300 attendees. Don’t be left out in the cold—register early for this important networking function. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Contact Rob Wallace or David Motes if you are or someone you know is interested in sponsoring this event.
The Estate and Financial Planning Committee will meet Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the Hard Rock Café to discuss the investment environment in 2010. See our chapter events calendar for more details.
CalCPA’s Technology Committee plans to host a free webcast Friday, Jan. 8, to discuss ways to protect your data. We will provide more details next month.
I welcome your comments and suggestions and would like to hear from you. Contact me via e-mail. I read each comment and respond.
