Tax-Aid to Help Families Get Stimulus Credits
Chapter members join together every year to support Tax-Aid, a nonprofit organization that offers free tax return preparation for low-income families at more than 25 locations around the Bay Area.
“The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act contained several provisions to help taxpayers struggling in the down economy,” says CalCPA member Kenneth Lee, CPA and president of Tax-Aid. “We want to make sure families benefit from changes in the Earned Income Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, partially refundable American Opportunity Credit and several other new or expanded credits for which they might be eligible.”
Tax-Aid is adding new locations in San Francisco, Oakland and East Palo Alto and is looking for more chapter members to volunteer.
There are many ways to help that do not require tax expertise. Tax-Aid provides equipment, software and training, and a typical volunteer donates six to 12 hours over a couple of Saturdays during tax season.
Chapter members interested in volunteering for Tax-Aid can learn more and sign up online. Members unable to volunteer, but wishing to help financially can donate online.
